SVCM to Host 50th Anniversary Celebration at Newly-Purchased Building on July 24!
BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry (SVCM) will mark its 50th anniversary with a free community celebration on Friday, July 24, 2026! SVCM will host the celebration at Hammer & Heart’s new headquarters at 695 NC-9 in Black Mountain. Live music, food, and children’s activities will run from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with an official blessing and ribbon cutting at 6 p.m. All are invited!
The celebration will be an opportunity for community members to see Hammer & Heart’s new space, which SVCM officially purchased on May 6, 2026. This 5,591-square-foot building “will also include a workshop that will improve efficiency and help us prepare for and complete projects,” says Hammer & Heart Program Director Charlie Wilson. The workshop will allow Hammer & Heart to build prefab projects like accessibility ramps and Stable Temporary Housing Units, furthering its mission to reclaim dignity through urgent home repairs. The space will also provide a central location for Hammer & Heart’s volunteer groups to gather and work. “It’s not just about fixing problems, it’s about building relationships,” notes SVCM Director Rev. Dr. Kevin Bates. “Relationships with our neighbors, community partners, and volunteers from all over the country.”
At its new headquarters, Hammer & Heart plans to deepen its collaboration with Community Organized Relief Efforts (CORE) to help more neighbors in need. CORE has been a primary partner in Hammer & Heart’s efforts to help Swannanoa Valley recover from Helene. The two nonprofits have often partnered on specific homes in Black Mountain and Swannanoa, each completing a different part of the project. “We recognize the needs in the community extend beyond what Hammer & Heart can accomplish alone,” says Wilson, “and we are committed to opening our doors to meaningful partnerships that will strengthen and support our Valley home together.”
Beyond this, the cavernous space will also host medical supply storage for SVCM NeighborCare, as well as parking for their future mobile medical clinic. Broadly, the new facility will allow SVCM to scale up holistic services for neighbors in need. “Above all,” Wilson emphasizes, “our hope is to use this building as a valuable resource for the community and a gathering place for service, collaboration, and restoration in the Swannanoa Valley.” SVCM’s General Ministry Fund provided capital for the purchase of the building. “We’re deeply thankful to the supporters who have made this milestone possible,” says Bates.
In addition to showcasing the new space, the July 24 celebration will commemorate SVCM’s 50th anniversary, with a photo exhibit showing milestones in the ministry’s history. SVCM staff will be on hand to greet neighbors and share more about the ministry’s work in the Swannanoa Valley. The Big Deal Band will play a live set and food will be available for purchase from Sabora food truck. There will be a bouncy house and fun children’s activities. Parking will be across the street at First Christian Church at 201 Blue Ridge Rd, with shuttle service available. Handicap parking will be on-site at 695 NC-9.
